- This is the future of abortion in a post-Roe America – Yellowhammer Fund executive director, Laurie Bertram Roberts, spoke to VOX about the challenges in red states that low income communities and people of color (and the abortion funds that serve them) will face without access to legal abortions. “I don’t know of any Southern fund, honestly, or any clinic that can really say we’re totally prepared for a post-Roe existence,” Roberts said. “None of us are funded enough.”
- U.S. Expels Migrant Children From Other Countries to Mexico – from The New York Times: “U.S. border authorities have been expelling migrant children from other countries into Mexico, violating a diplomatic agreement with Mexico and testing the limits of immigration and child welfare laws. The expulsions put children from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador at risk by sending them with no accompanying adult into a country where they have no family connections.”
- Maternal mortality panel finds 70 percent of Alabama pregnancy deaths preventable; urges Medicaid expansion – “Even though these deaths are connected with pregnancy, most of them happened 43 days to one year after childbirth. This is important to note, the report’s authors point out, because Alabama Medicaid terminates coverage six weeks after childbirth. Women left uninsured after those six weeks may not be able to afford medical care for potentially life-threatening physical or mental health issues that arose from their pregnancy. Alabama is one of 14 states that has not expanded Medicaid.”
