Before abortion became illegal in Alabama, West Alabama Women’s Center was providing the majority of abortions in our state. Similarly, Yellowhammer Fund was ensuring that abortion seekers could pay for and travel to and from their appointments. When it was legal for us to do so, YHF assisted about 2,000 Alabama and Deep South abortion patients per year.
Alabama’s abortion ban is so strict that ANY Alabamians assisting abortion seekers – even patients seeking legal care in an access state – could be prosecuted for “conspiracy [to commit a crime]”. Because of those devastating barriers to health care, Yellowhammer Fund and West Alabama Women’s Center pivoted to provide preventive safer sex services and to assist those continuing their pregnancies post-Roe.

Tomorrow’s bus tour stop is a prime example of doing the work ourselves. WAWC will be offering the following for FREE: Ella (Emergency Contraceptive w/ higher weight limit than OTC brands,) Jasmiel and Sprintec birth control pills, condoms, and WAWC swag. And of course YHF will bring the Repro Raven bus loaded with FREE diapers, safer sex kits, Plan B, pads, tampons, condoms, pregnancy tests, and lunches.
