Alabama Abortion FAQs

Alabama Abortion FAQs

Hey y’all!

We know keeping up with the latest abortion bans can be overwhelming and confusing, so to help, we’ve put together an FAQ about abortion access in Alabama. We have also included information and resources shared from ‘Reckon’s guide to abortion in Alabama.’

Q: What type of ban is currently in effect in Alabama?
A: There is a TOTAL BAN, except “in cases where abortion is necessary in order to prevent a serious health risk to the unborn child’s mother.” Abortion providers can also face felony charges with up to 99 years in prison for providing an abortion.

Q: What about abortion pills by telehealth or by mail?
A: Alabama law bans access to pills such as mifepristone through telehealth or by mail.

Q: Can I get in trouble for helping someone access an abortion in another state?
A: This is still under review by the Alabama AG’s office. The abortion ban in effect only targets abortion providers, but state law may criminalize the the act of helping someone get an abortion, even if it happens in another state. We don’t know if the state has this authority, how it would be enforced, or who it will impact yet.
